Five Master Edits Assignment

The first master edit my partner and I chose to do was symbolism. For this, we started off with having character number 1 texting on their phone with the phone light emitting onto her face. The camera zooms in on the phone light and transitions onto the light from a lamp by using a fade. This is symbolic because the light of the phone which was the main focus of character 1 transformed into the light on character 2’s desk as she completed her homework. This edit allowed for the story to transition smoothly and seamlessly into the next scene while connecting the two objects.

The second master edit in our video is contrast. Our video jumps from a clip of a student studying to a clip of a student on her phone. These clips cut back and forth to emphasize the different priorities each are focusing on. These clips show contrast because they show two very different students, one studious and the other lazy, as they partake in the activity their personalities would rather them do, studious girl studying and lazy girl scrolling on phone. During these clips, we used just a normal cut for the transition since it worked well to quickly jump from one scene to the next and emphasized the difference.

For the third master edit we used parallelism. In order to show this, we used clips of character 1 on her phone typing and messing up and then retyping and deleting  and character two messing up a problem and erasing. This worked to show the similarities between the two different tasks and the parallelism between them. For the transition, we used a fade in order to emphasise the parallelism between the two clips. The fade gradually changes the phone to the paper, allowing the audience to see how they relate.

The fourth master edit was leitmotif. For this, we included a soundtrack of upbeat, classical, and sophisticated music for everytime you see character 2 on screen studying. This creates the recurring thought about how character 2 is working hard. Classical music already has an underlying tone of being smart so this emphasizes that the character has this trait as well.

The last master edit in this video is simultaneity. In order to show this, we started with character 1 in her bed on her phone, being lazy and then used a cut transition to switch to a studious girl working hard on her homework. At the end of both clips, the characters finish what they’re doing and get up. This shows two characters doing completely different tasks at the same time. While one works hard, the other procrastinates doing what she should be doing. These events happen at the same time and this is emphasized when both characters get up from where they are.
