Second Cut of Film Opening
This week my group took our first cut and used feedback from our peers to try to get it to its final form. There are still small parts that will most likely need revised but for the most part, me and my group are extremely pleased with what we have created.
Cameron had the role of editor for this film so she was the one making most of the changes. After seeing the first cut, we spent a lot of time deciding what needed to be fixed. For example, we switched the order of a few clips to create a smoother storyline. Along with that, we shortened a lot of the clips in order to build suspense. Our peers had some comments saying that the scene of the clown walking up the stairs lost a lot of the suspense because the actresses, me, looked like she was actually laughing. By taking this clip out, we kept and improved the serious and scary tone we were trying to create. Cameron added eerie music to the background in order to further this tone.
One of my personal favorite differences between the first cut and the second is the folley of shoes walking and the girls talking, because the wind had lost a lot of that sound. During our class time allowed to work on the project, we went outside and filmed the foley. This was a very fun experience and made the whole thing feel more like a real movie.
When it came to the titles, we knew we wanted a font that agreed with the tone we had created. In order to do so, we thought a deep red was a good color because it’s a color often seen in horror movie openings. This means that the audience will connect the titles with that genre. The actual font also worked to push our tone to the audience because its a very serious and sharp looking font. I knew that we shouldn’t use a cliche horror font because, to me, those fonts look very outdated, overused, and looses scariness even if it’s related to many horror movies.
Cameron took creative leeway with the first opening scene that included our production name and I believe she did an amazing job with it. It’s spooky yet serious and the still background with the music sets the audience up for a very suspenseful film.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with the product we have so far and I can only imagine it getting better. My team has worked so well together and this has become one of my favorite projects I’ve done all school year.
